Important Elements Of A Christian Education Curriculum

Science & Religion Stock PhotosLong before the time when swimsuits, sunglasses, and bikes are replaced with backpacks, books, and pencils, Christian schools begin looking for the best Christian education curriculum for the new school year. No matter what age a student may be, the curriculum and school need to reflect the values and beliefs of the family, as well as serve the primary purpose of a school in teaching and instructing their students. Schools and instruction can vary as much as day and night. Often, public schools provide a focus on being successful within worldly eyes; however, a Christian school provides a curriculum that focuses on God and His will in all areas of life. Here are a few other specific elements schools and parents should look for when considering a Christian education curriculum:

Creation: In a Christian education curriculum, the focus of any subject begins with an emphasis on God’s creation! The curriculum emphasizes and reinforces the reality of Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Whether students are learning about math, science, or language arts, the curriculum teaches that all of creation is His handiwork. As a result, we are called to be stewards of His masterpiece. The curriculum’s resources assist students in seeing God’s creation as a work of talent, precision, and detail. It also challenges students to praise and glorify God for the twinkling stars, the sand on the seashore, and the birds in the air. Psalm 8:3-4 says, “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” Students learn that they are created by God in His image, and they are not products of years and years of evolution. Each student is unique, original, and hand-crafted by God, so a Christian education curriculum should illustrate how each person is important and plays a significant role in God’s world. Creation shows that everyone is created by God and is special in His eyes.

Control: In today’s society, people like to think they are in control, and many believe they own their schedules. However, they forget that God is in control of all things. A Christian education curriculum teaches students that they are not their own, but they belong to God. 1 Chronicles 29:11-12 says, “Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all. Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.” These verses show that all things belong to God, and He is in control. Students learn that whatever they do is for God’s kingdom. With God in control, students can be confident that nothing happens by chance, and all things are planned and oriented according to His will. This knowledge gives students and parents a sense of assurance. Students understand that God is in control of their lives, and their assignment on Earth is to serve God and assist in furthering His kingdom.

Compassion: Another fundamental foundation of a Christian education curriculum is God’s compassion. From a very early age, children learn that Jesus loves them. They sing about it in Sunday school and learn about it in church. This foundation doesn’t waiver as children get older. God loves His creation so much that He sent His only Son to save the world when it became tainted by sin. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). This verse shows that creation and His children are special to Him. God’s compassion is never-ending, and the curriculum should exhibit that God’s love is unconditional and true.

Homework Boy Stock ImageChrist at the Center: The major foundation of a Christian education curriculum is that the material teaches students that all of their life needs to be centered on Christ. Everything we say, do, and even think should meet God’s standards and edify Him. The curriculum is based on the Bible, so it emphasizes the development of a personal relationship with Jesus. Though a curriculum does teach students about the world around them, it challenges them to look at the world from a Christian perspective. With Christ at the center, a student’s work, play, family, recreation, and view of the world should all look differently, as we seek to bring glory to God in all that we do!

When looking for the best Christian education curriculum, schools should look for a Christ-centered curriculum that illustrates God’s awesome creation, the control of God, and His unfailing compassion. Most importantly, a Christian curriculum shows students how special they are to God and how their lives will positively impact the world around them!

How To Calculate Grade Point Averages

Teacher And Students Stock PhotographyA Grade Point Average is one way of summarizing a student’s performance as a single number. In a broad sense, it is an average of the grades a student has achieved in all her courses of study. Grade Point Averages are used as a way for educational institutions to compare the results of students from different schools.

Grade Point Averages

There are different ways of calculating a Grade Point Average with secondary and tertiary schools using different methods. Generally secondary schools, such as High Schools use a direct average of the grades a student has achieved, while tertiary institutions such as universities also take into account the credit points associated with each course when calculating the average.

This article is a look at how to calculate Grade Point Averages (GPA) in a secondary environment such as High School. Internationally there is variation in the way different provinces or districts measure and record student performance, but the 4.0 point scale for calculating a GPA is becoming one widely used standard. For High School students the simplest way that you can calculate a GPA is as follows.

The Mathematics

Firstly each grade is assigned a numerical value. For example using the common set of letter grades of A, B, C, D, and F the value of each grade is:

A = 4.0
B = 3.0
C = 2.0
D = 1.0
F = 0.0

Your school may use different grades and values, but the method used to figure out the GPA will be the same in each case. Calculating the GPA requires totaling the value of the grades and then dividing by the number of grades. This results in an average that ranges between 0 and 4.0. With 4.0 been the highest GPA and 0 the lowest.

Unweighted GPA

Here is a concrete example. Student Michel has achieved these grades A, B, A, A, C, B, A, and A for the semester. Converting those grades to the numerical values they become 4.0, 3.0, 4.0, 4.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 4.0. Adding these up (4.0 + 3.0 + 4.0 + 4.0 + 2.0 + 3.0 + 4.0 + 4.0) equals 28. Now to get the average the total is divided by the number of grades, which is 8, and the average becomes (28 / 8) which equals 3.5. So the GPA for Michel is 3.5.

Collector's Dream Stock ImageThe steps in this calculation are straightforward and easy to do, but if you need to calculate the GPA for a large set of students then a computer application is recommended to save time and reduce errors. With a spreadsheet you can set up the calculations, or to save more time a specialised application such as The Gradebook Program can convert letter grades to a final GPA in a single action.

A complication to consider is how the Grade Point Average is calculated if there are courses that work at an accelerated or higher level. For example, schools may have courses that are at an Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or Honors level. When calculating the GPA, adjustments can be made so students in the more advanced courses receive a higher GPA.

Weighted GPA

When this is done it is called a weighted GPA. Continuing with Michel’s example with the same list of grades, if the first three grades are from Advanced Placement (AP) courses, when those three grades are converted to a numerical value they are increased by a pre-determined amount to increase the students average.

By doing this a weighted GPA takes into account that an “A” in an AP course should reflect a higher level of achievement than an “A” in a regular course. And so students are rewarded for doing the more difficult study. Since this is called a weighted GPA, a GPA that does not take into account the level of the courses is called an unweighted GPA.

The amount that each grade is increased by will vary across schools, but for this example the AP courses get an additional 0.20 added to each grade. This makes the values 4.2, 3.2, 4.2, 4.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 4.0 because 0.2 has been added to the first three values. So the new weighted GPA is (4.2 + 3.2 + 4.2 + 4.0 + 2.0 + 3.0 + 4.0 + 4.0) / 8 which equals 3.58 when rounded to 2 decimal places. With The Gradebook Program there is the option of weighting the grades to a weight you specify, or you can let the program do an unweighted GPA.

Give Your Kids A Head Start For College

College Students Royalty Free Stock ImageThe 529 plan was started in 1998; the name came from section 529 of the Internal Revenue Service, which created these savings plans. With the 529 plan parents can choose two options. The first is a savings program which allows students to use the full value of the account to any accredited college or university in the country, and some foreign institutions accept the plan.

The second option is the prepaid option. The plan covers in state tuition and will allow the student to transfer the value of the plan to private and out of state schools.

There are incentives to making larger upfront deposits on the plan. If you make a contribution between $12,000 and $60,000 for your beneficiary, you can treat the contribution as made over a five year period and for gift tax purposes.

Some parents may have a few questions about the 529 plan. Here are some facts.
* Parents do not have to pay taxes on the accounts earnings.
* Students do not have access to the account, the parent/grandparent does, and this assures the money will be used for school.
* If the student does not want to attend college, then the plan can be rolled over to another student.
* If the student receives a scholarship, the unused money can be withdrawn without any penalty, besides the tax.
* Anyone can contribute to the 529 plan
* There is no age limit for when the money can be used
* There are no income requirements that may make a student ineligible for a plan
Parents can contribute as little as $25.00-$50.00 per month to this plan. This adds up if parents begin saving when their children are first born. In hard economic times, being able to contribute such a small amount over a long period of time really adds up.

Graduation, College And Education Royalty Free Stock ImageAnother popular way for saving for a child’s college education is a Certificate of Deposit, or CD. What many parents don’t know is that CDs are part of a program that can be used specifically for college education. These are called CollegeSure CDs. These CDs are different from regular CDs; the main difference is the interest rate. The interest rate is guaranteed to be at least equal to the average increase of the cost of attending college. The idea is to purchase these CDs for the amount college would cost you in the present, and then the CDs earn interest that result in enabling you to pay for college by the time they mature.

Knowing how much your child’s college education is going to cost is the tricky part. The best thing to do is figure out which school your child will attend, then decide what size CD you will need to purchase. The main thing to remember is that it is never too early to start saving for your child’s education.

No matter how you do it, whether it is a savings account or CD, any amount you save will help in the future.

The Junior College Baseball

Baseball Players Editorial ImageWhat if I told you I could offer you nearly 500 more opportunities to play college baseball? If you had been excluding JUCO options, let me try and change your mind to at least think about it. By including the possibility of attending a junior college you are adding 484 more baseball programs into the mix (395 NJCAA programs and another 89 in California). That means roughly another 17,000 roster spots up for grabs!

How JUCO Baseball is Organized

There are two main governing bodies that cover all JUCO baseball programs, the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), and the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA), which was formerly known as the Commission On Athletics or COA. This week the focus will be on NJCAA baseball and next week we’ll cover the community colleges of California, which operate independently of the NJCAA and the rest of the country.

One little known fact is that the NJCAA, just like the NCAA, has 3 divisions and they each compete for separate national championships. The conferences and teams are divided into 24 regions across the country. At last report there were 188 Division I baseball programs, 129 in Division II and 78 in Division III.

JUCO Scholarship Money

The maximum number of scholarships allowed by the NJCAA for baseball is another reason why you might want to consider attending a JUCO. Both DI and DII schools at this level can offer up to 24 scholarships to baseball players, far more than the 4 year schools can offer. The difference between these two JUCO divisions is that a DI scholarship can include full tuition, room, board, and books, where a DII scholarship can be for a maximum of full tuition only. Just as it is in the NCAA, there are no athletic scholarships in Div III.

Keep in mind that these numbers are based on the maximum number of scholarships allowed by regulation. It does not mean that every JUCO program offers the 24 full scholarships. Each institution decides whether or not it is going to fully fund this number of scholarships based on it’s philosophy and finances. And it is a perfectly acceptable question to politely ask the coach at a JUCO if his program fully funds 24 scholarships.

When you combine the additional baseball scholarships available with the wide range of academic and need based financial aid at junior colleges, it can make for a very attractive option when your college budget is tight.

Academics

The academics at a junior college of course vary from school to school, but overall I think that they’ve gotten a bad rap. JUCO’s offer opportunities to the student athlete that is not academically ready for a 4 year school and might not qualify under NCAA or NAIA guidelines. Many athletes have taken advantage of the junior college route to get on firm footing in their studies and then move on to graduate from a 4 year school. After all, that is one of the main purposes for a junior college’s existence! As with most things in life, a junior college education is what you make of it, and there is no reason to feel that starting with a junior college education will limit you. A student that finishes his time at a junior college with a high GPA and an associates degree in hand can then transfer to almost any 4 year school.

Baseball-Level of Play

Lockers Stock Photos

Junior college baseball probably has the widest range in level of play from top to bottom. The competition varies from schools where any reasonably talented high school player has a shot to make the team, to perennial powerhouse programs that can beat up on most NCAA DI’s and have multiple players drafted into professional baseball each year. This variety is a very attractive characteristic of JUCO baseball. What that means to a high school player like you is that there is most likely a good sized group of 2 year schools out there that feature a level of play that fits your abilities.

In summary, JUCO baseball offers an impressive list of advantages; a large number of schools to choose from, more baseball scholarships than 4 year schools, a chance to get academics in order, and many different levels of competition. You might find that a 2 year school offers what you need.

The Best Accredited Online High School

On-line Education Graduation Royalty Free Stock PhotographyThese days, in order for your children to get a high school education, they no longer have to spend long hours at the local high school every day. There are many reasons why online high school might be a better choice for numbers of families today. One may be frequent transfers for a parent’s job, or a work assignment overseas where you may want to take your children.

Christian parents especially, might be very meticulous about their choice of school. They want a variety of programs with a good Christian education and worldview. If distance learning has become necessary, parents will have less to worry about in their children’s education if they decide to enroll them in an online Christian high school. Children can now do their schoolwork on a more convenient timetable and from the comfort of their homes.

Following a particular pattern of study is very important for children, as their study pattern often molds their minds toward what they might choose to take up as a career in the future. The differences between a regular school and an online school could be many, but educationally some of the best study work comes from online schooling. Getting children into an online Christian high school does not mean that families do not still have a part in instructing their children. All children, whether schooling online, or in regular brick and mortar, need proper motivation and support from their family in order to excel in their education and grow in their faith.

Homework Time Royalty Free Stock PhotosOnline course material covers the same required subjects as the regular schools, but because they are online, they often are able to offer more and specialized courses which may serve to interest the students in different ways. The best part of online high school is that distance does not keep the children away from their schoolwork. Children can begin a study pattern and stick to it, even if they are constantly travelling. Moreover, the teachers remain the same, just as in a normal school. There is even the opportunity for social interaction between the other students in the online school, giving the teenagers that much needed, and sought after, social aspect of school.

Finding the right accredited online high school can be a tough job. There are hoards of schools online, and to be able to find a good Christian school while you are at it, is even tougher. The best accredited online high school would give children the gift of knowledge, as well as imparting the knowledge of Christ.

Some children are more methodical than others, and like to have more time with their lessons than the amount afforded for them in a regular school. Online schools can be of great value and help with this. The time that would be spent travelling to and from school can be utilized for study, and some online schools allow more time than the normal 9 month school year. In addition, the online scholar is not limited to the hours that the school doors are open, online school is available to the student at all hours of the day, or even the night.
