I attended the undergraduate film program at The University Of Southern California and then proceeded with my film education at New York University where I graduated with a BFA. During my time at USC I attended numerous classes and worked on several productions of friends that were in the program. In this short essay I’ll try and give an overview of what I view as the strengths and weaknesses of the program as I see them.

The Location

The USC School of Cinematic Arts is located on the main campus of the University of Southern California which is located just south of downtown Los Angeles in an area bordering what is considered southwest LA. For those unfamiliar with Los Angeles and USC, the school consists of a well maintained and manicured campus that is enclosed as an ‘oasis’ from the surrounding areas of east LA which are not nearly as nice.

Traditionally, the west side of Los Angeles is what people think of when they think of the beaches and nicer suburban areas as well as Hollywood and Beverly Hills which are just east of the ocean communities but west of USC. While those living on campus enjoy a nice environment, it is generally accepted that venturing too far away from the main campus is not the best experience with many if not most students choosing to leave during the weekends as the school does have a strong commuter element to it.

The Curriculum

The USC Undergraduate Cinema Program is structured in three tiers, the 200, 300, and 400 level with each tier of courses increasing in complexity and generally relying on the successful completion of those levels below. While you have a choice between several options depending on your area of interest there are some required classes including the ‘core’ classes of Cinema 310, generally taken in junior year and Cinema 480, generally taken senior year.

Cinema 310 and 480 are the core production classes of the program where students are put into either teams or crews and produce their larger productions. While Cinema 310 consisted of non-synced sound and 480 was a larger more sync-sound production, things have evolved over the years. Both courses have a ‘screening’ in a sort of festival at the end of the semester where students show their films to each other and family and friends are invited to view them. The very best of these can often be used as portfolio pieces to gain representation although usually they are not of the quality or length of the graduate level films.

The facilities of the school of Cinema/Television at USC are outstanding. George Lucas, one of the school’s notable alumni, has made numerous substantial donations to the school and recently donated $175 million to build a large expansion of the school. In addition, Steven Spielberg and others have donated money for facilities. The current school is built like a small studio with notable buildings including The George Lucas Instructional Building, The Steven Spielberg Music Scoring Stage and The Marcia Lucas Post-Production Building.

The Professors

USC has a very good and dedicated staff of professors consisting of both full-time as well as adjunct faculty. Most professors have an extensive history of working in the feature film and television industries with several having been nominated for Oscars and Emmys. In the past, the school has had numerous famous faculty including Irving Thalberg, Alfred Hitchcock, D.W. Griffith and Darryll Zanuck.

After Graduation

USC has a very powerful and large alumni network with numerous alum working in virtually every area of Film and Television Production. Only NYU is comparable in numbers and quality of alumni in the industry. Smart students utilize this resource to gain informational interviews and internships to ease the transition into the work world after graduation.

Internships are available through the school at virtually ever studio and numerous post production companies as well as agencies and other areas. Internships are a great way not only to make connections but to ‘explore’ different areas of the industry before deciding on a career path.

The Orlando schools will be promoting health and wellness to its students this year. As part of the Orange County Schools, the Orlando schools will implement a new wellness policy that was just approved this month.

The new policy is in response to a federal mandate, under the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004. All schools that receive federal funding for school lunch programs must have a wellness policy in place.

The wellness program for the Orlando schools is designed to promote better health to their students. Healthy eating and physical activity will play a big part in the Orlando schools’ policy. The hope is to completely change the Orlando schools’ environments to healthier ones.

With the new wellness program effective on the first day of school, each of the Orlando schools is challenged to be creative and innovative in implementing wellness activities and promotions.

Each of the Orlando schools will create a Healthy School Team (HST). The organization of each team is based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Coordinated School Health Model. There will be a member on each HST to represent each of the following areas of health:

• Health education,
• Counseling.
• Psychological and social services,
• School health services,
• Nutrition services,
• Physical education,
• The healthy school environment,
• Health promotion for Orlando schools’ staff, and
• Family and community.

Under the belief that healthy children is a community-wide concern, each of the Orlando schools will enlist the involvement of parents, families, teachers, counselors, school administrators, healthcare professionals, businesses, and community groups and organizations.

The Orange County schools already have experimented with the wellness program, which will benefit the Orlando schools. For almost three years, the program has been used in 13 schools within the county. The HSTs have been found to be quite effective in promoting health and wellness, not only for the students but their families and school staff, as well. The Orlando schools will use much of the information and experiences from these schools, when implementing their own wellness program this year.

The experimental HSTs have sponsored walking and running clubs for students, school staff, and parents. Another example of creative thinking by the HSTs is “wellness Wednesdays”, whereby students are rewarded for being involved in healthy activities, such as eating nutritious lunches, drinking water versus soda, or participating in a physical activity. Each HST at the Orlando schools will be charged with developing activities that meet the specific needs of each school and its students. The HST members are limited only by their own imaginations to develop creative promotions, events and activities.

The new wellness program at the Orlando schools is all about health and wellness for children, and helping everyone concerned to understand the importance of good health and its effect upon a child’s ability to learn. From the federal mandate to the Orlando schools’ implementation of the wellness program, the sole purpose is to improve the health of students in order for them to be better able to learn and achieve — now and in the future.

The Courteeners are an 4-piece indie rock band hailed from Manchester, England in 2006 by Liam Fray (Guitar/Vocals), Michael Campbell (Drums/Backing Vocals), Daniel Conan Moores (Guitar), and Mark Cuppello (Bass). All four were raised from the Middleton area of Greater Manchester and have know each other since they were 10 years old. They even attended Cardinal Langley RC High School together in Middleton. Morrissey (from The Smiths) mentioned his love for The Courteeners on numerous plays and occasions.

St. Jude is such a modern rock and roll album. At times, their indie rock genre can become really radio friendly, and yet they still managed to keep the “indie feel”. Thanks to Liam’s husky voice!

St. Judes kicks off with “Aftershow”. A dark-like atmosphere track that at the beginning, it resembles “Hunting for Witches” by Bloc Party. Take notice at the bass in this song. I somehow find it very groovy in a dark way. Very suitable for the villain role in a movie. During the break.. Liam goes, “Ah…..”. It blends and goes very well the music. It may not be a cheerful or appetizing opener. But it’s still good.

“Cavorting” honestly, is a very radio-friendly track. The guitar riff and playing brings on a cheerful note. As soon as the rhythm guitar and the bass hit in, it sounded very pop-rock. But nonetheless, it’s still a very infectious track, i like the way The Courteeners pluck and riff their guitar after each verse break
and chorus. It sounds very light by the way they play it and they seems to be enjoying that particular part. “And now your too tired to eat and your too hungry to sleepŔ Smart lyrics eh!

The light-guitar and piano playing of “Bide Your Time” is one of the main ingredients in the success of this song. It begins with soft-guitar playing and followed by piano which enters excactly just at the right time to boost up this song. And until the end, you still can hear the soft-guitar playing which is so
addictive and just feels so good to your ears. Try the acoustic version, you might be blown away. From what i heard, it sounds as if the girl which Liam is singing about is no longer around.. “The Temptation is all to great.. Now its gone and its all to late.. I tried and i tried but i never applied..” But he doesn’t sound sad at all.. Kind of coufused.

“What Took You So Long?” starts off with a mid-tempo constant plucking of the guitar. It sounds sort of sad at first listen. However after a few listens, this song by The Courteeeners is not bad at all. Liam sings as if he’s tired of waiting for the girl and came up with excuses such as,”What took you so long, was there a queue at the post office? What took you so long, was there a dirty double-decker stagecoach you just happened to miss?” At the end of the day, they just end up with an argument.. Compared to what Liam sings, “Sometimes I’m bad, sometimes I’m rottenŔ, this song is not rotten at all. Oh, the acoustic version is not bad either, could be even better than the album version.

Please don’t stop here but keep reading on… This next track is called b>“Please Don’t”. It’s an indie rock ballad which will appeal to someone who would like the album to slow down a bit. All is not that slow, the constant and non-stop plucking of the guitar can be heard throughout the whole song. When it comes to the chorus, the music and singing of The Courteeeners becomes a start/stop motion. Liam recalled the past in pain in this song, “But those days have passed and these types of relationship never last… So please
dont pretend that we’ll stay friendsŔ Talking about pain, i kind of enjoy this song.

“If It Wasn’t For Me” is a loud and guitar-packed song that is about a girl who Liam is trying to protect from any harm. If it wasn’t for the lyrics, i wouldn’t even know that this song is about protecting a girl. Liam also sings in a sarcastic way, “If it wasn’t for me then you wouldn’t know them, if it wasn’t for
me then you wouldn’t know themŔ By the end of the day, it’s ‘them’ whom Liam is trying to protect the girl from. What a twist.

“No You Didn’t, No You Don’t” has a very heavy bass line to it. The guitar and bass are the major unique factors that this track is famous for. “No you didn’t, and no you don’tŔ Liam keeps voicing and singing the phrase, recalling the fun he and his friend had while they were still in school. Spending time in garage, doing keys, and being snobbish. Great track with very clever writing of lyrics.

“How Come” is about a guy who is an all-rounder at all things and aspects, from wooing girls and impressing guys. Liam would be the student and learn from him the next time he’s out showing off his stuffs. Smart and witty! A lovely ballad for all to enjoy!

“Kings Of The New Road” explodes! It’s such an explosive track! From the lyrics, The Kings of The New Road and they are always on the road and never go home. “I loved you, i still do, i probably always will do..”, as Liam sings on. It would be a great rock and roll track on the road, or even off the road. Cheers!

Catchy title track! “Not Nineteen Forever” tells the story about a girl who doesn’t wants to get into a relationship and ahem… Some… Liam shoots back with “You’re not nineteen forever pull yourselves together..” Sarcastic yet funny. However the way Liam sings and the music itself prove that this is one of
their hit songs. It somehow sounds very cheerful, perhaps is by the way they play their guitars. For a slower version, try the acoustic version.

“Fallowfield Hillbilly” is packed with the riffing of guitar, from start to finish. There are some parts where The Courteeners played the guitars in such a cute way. Nevertheless, it’s quite a loud track.. But loud in a friendly-to-ear way. And at some point, it is as if Liam is screaming rather than singing, giving the final touch to this song. The boy who likes underground band, can’t even tell the difference between an underground band and a normal band.

“Yesterday, Today & Probably Tomorrow” is the final track on the album. It’s another slow and soft ballad. Just a cool and soothing way to close the album. In this song, Liam basically sings about reality and practicality. We won’t know what will happen in the future. As The Courteeners perform, operator announcements can heard on the background and probably, just probably, The Courteeners are leaving to some place.

“Acrylic” can be found in the Special Edition CD. Just like “Not Nineteen Forever”, it’s very radio-friendly and such a happy tune. “Dadadada dadadaaaa oh, all the words they seem to know, all the words in your sons goŔ The playing of the guitar can be obviously heard, one second is the voice of Liam, another is the guitar. A fast track with no time to lose.

“Kimberley” sounds like “Kings Of The New Road”. It’s those track that you make you nod your head and tap your feet. And seriously, this rocks and most importantly, it explodes! Liam sings as if he’s singing directly from the microphone, which also makes “Kimberly” sounds so good. Poor Kim, this song is about her drug-filled story.. Instead of being sad for her, this track really rocks!

“An Ex Is An Ex For A Reason” is performed acoustically. The real deal is the last 32 seconds where it truly stands out throughout the whole song. A song that is most suitable for your ex. The real meaning behind this song is in the ex herself.

Rating: The Courteeners play music that is so radio-friendly and yet so indie. It’s hard for me to describe how does it feel, but i can only say that The Courteeners’ music is not something that is fresh or new. And throughout the whole album, their musical scope is monotonous. But at a different point of view, they have played their game well! They are very good in their musical scope, that is really somthing! With this debut album, “St. Jude”, my rating would be 6.8 out of 10.

The Montessori schools offer a learning method which should be explored by both parents of school-age children and those who are merely curious about the education of children. An Italian teacher, Maria Montessori, formulated the theories in the beginning of the century that these schools are based upon. While many schools will call themselves a Montessori school, and they may do so proudly, there are things you should keep in mind. While a school may say ‘Montessori’, it may have a loose definition and with no standards for using the name Montessori, you will find that the standards and method of teaching may vary greatly from another Montessori School.

Traditional public school typically operate where the children sit at desks and are given written material to work with. Children often have trouble retaining information because what they are learning at the time is not important to them and they are still expected to learn it. Montessori schools, on the other hand, seek to foster learning in the child by enlarging on the child’s existing interests. The teachers are there to help students when needed, but also give suggestions on alternative ways to learn. This approach not only gives a student the desire to learn, but also sparks an excitement about learning.

You can expect Montessori schools to be very proactive and engaging during the evaluation process. There is a strong emphasis on coming up with a theory and then heading out to test it, and as a result, you will often see a lot of implementation of the prospects that are being taught at this point. One goal of the Montessori method is that children can learn the most in bursts of intense focus and concentration. At this point, the instructor typically will let the child work on their own while taking a backseat as an observer in the learning process.

This method of teaching is based on the one practiced at Montessories, which state at its core that the children are capable and interested to learn by themselves. This method finds that it is important for educators to be people who observe the child rather then dictating or lecturing to them.

Through observation of what the child does and what he or she is interested in, the teacher will be able to find a way to show them the skills that they need to to know. When you are looking at schools that use the Montessori method, you will find that they are most commonly elementary schools or junior high schools. Montessori high schools are a bit rarer but they do exist.

One reason that you will see so many Montessori elementary schools and middle schools is due to the theory that states that a child has a very absorbent mind from birth to the age of six. Here, the theory says they have unlimited motivation to learn and to develop certain skills and knowledge.

When you consider how much a child needs to learn by certain ages, it’s easy to see why this is. Children of this age are extremely impressionable to learning from their surrounding culture - if they are encouraged to pursue these interests at a young age, it can become a life-long habit.

Examining the Montessori teaching principles will show you the multiple benefits of such an education for your child, not only academically but personally. The child is taught first hand that he or she will be rewarded for thinking on their own and coming up with their own solutions. Moreover, they will also be taught to move forward with intellectual and academic curiosity and to tackle their problems head on. Later in life this will serve them well. They will know to look for solutions and to work independently.

There are a lot of things to think about when looking into a Montessori school program for your child. Make sure that you check into the schools personally and find out how their version of the Montessori method works; there is a lot of good out there that you can do for your own child!

To be successful in high school means a lot more than just studying and grades. Yes, grades can be part of overall high school success but they are not the entire story. Here are some other important factors to know if you want to be successful in high school.

Lifestyle & Personal Balance Required To Be Successful

Even if you put in enough time for studying to get good grades, you should still take some time to do sports or exercise. It’s good to have a balance of body and mind. Like study habits, it’s best to develop good physical fitness habits now because it will be darn hard later in life. If you don’t believe me, just take a good look outside or in a shopping mall. What do you see? Lots of unhealthy overweight people, right? If you want to keep having a sexy body for many years to come, you have to keep physically active. There’s no way around it.

It doesn’t matter whether you exercise through sports at school, outside organized clubs/leagues, with your friends or even on your own. Just be active. Find activities that you will enjoy. If you don’t know what you like, try different things out. You can play tennis, team sports like basketball, workout at a gym, snowboard, do martial arts or even dance. The options are endless. Don’t be a slouch. Make sure that you have a decent diet too. That doesn’t mean overloading with junk food or starving yourself. You need good fuel to provide energy for exercise.

Make time for a social life too. Partying is okay but if too much partying is affecting your grades, then you have to cut down. Go ahead and party once your grades are back up but don’t let them sink again. Stay out of trouble with the law too. You don’t want a criminal record to prevent you from having a successful future career.

Attitude To Be Successful In High School

Look at the most popular, successful students at your high school. I don’t necessarily mean the hottest looking, the most athletic, the toughest, or even the smartest. These kids may not always be well liked by everyone. Instead, look at those who are the friendliest and most well liked at school. These kids have virtually no enemies. Their grades are decent but not necessarily the top. They are fit but not necessarily the athletic stars. Ask yourself, what makes these kids so well liked? They are probably very well rounded and have the best attitudes. They seem to have good leadership skills.

Study these students and copy them because I can predict with confidence that they will eventually become the most successful in life. These kids have what is known as superior people skills. Success in future careers will depend on a combination of intelligence and people skills far more than just intelligence alone. This is a secret I’m sharing with you way in advance. Most students even in university or college won’t know about this yet!

If you want to get ahead in developing people and leaderships skills that will be of value in a future career, think about getting a part-time job during the school year and definitely work during the summers. Besides making some of your own extra spending money, you will learn to deal with different people. This is a skill you won’t learn in school but will be very important in your future.

Staying in High School vs. Quitting?

Don’t even think about quitting high school! History has shown that those who finish high school will get further ahead in life. Yeah, yeah I know, there are some people who have become multi-millionaires and big stars without ever graduating from high school but they are extremely rare. Sure there’s a chance that you may become successful without a high school diploma but why gamble? Don’t you want to increase your overall chances of becoming successful?

If so, you will need a high school education. Being educated just gives you more options out there in life. It opens more doors for you. Also, if it is important for others to respect you as someone who could speak with intelligence, an education will definitely help.

Don’t quit high school to rush into work. If you are going to work for the next 40-50 years, then taking a few years to get through high school is not a huge investment of your time. It is actually investing in yourself. Do your time now for greater potential rewards later. If you already quit high school a number of years ago, it’s never too late to go back and get your diploma as a mature student, especially at night school.

The SAT can be a daunting and nerve-racking test for high school students all over California. After all, it’s a huge part of the journey on the way to applying to colleges! That’s why we’ve put together a list of ways you can significantly improve your score. Just follow these tips and you’re on your way! (Remember: You will have 3 hours and 45 minutes to take the SAT. Students with learning disabilities will receive time and a half.)

The Writing Section:

1. The highest score that you can receive on the SAT is 2400 (800 for the writing, critical reading, and math sections). The essay counts for 30% of your writing score. You will have 25 minutes to write a well-developed essay, for which you will receive a score of 1-6.

2. Decide if you agree or disagree with the essay prompt and write your thesis. Then give yourself no more than 5 minutes to quickly outline your essay response! Your essay should consist of 4-5 paragraphs: an introduction, one paragraph each detailing two or three different examples that support your thesis, and a conclusion. Try to use one example from literature / history / current events and your own personal experience.

3. After briefly outlining your essay, give yourself about 5 minutes to write each of the two or three supporting paragraphs and another 4 minutes to write your conclusion. Use the remaining time to proofread. This may seem overwhelming now, but the more you practice taking the essay portion of the SAT while timing yourself, the easier it will become!

4. Review the types of multiple-choice questions on the writing section: approximately 18 identifying sentence errors, 25 improving sentences, and 6 improving paragraph questions. Two sections will take 25 minutes each and 1 section will take 10 minutes. There is generally an unknown experimental section (an additional math, writing, or critical reading section) on the SAT that will not count toward your score.

5. Common errors tested are: subject-verb agreement, faulty parallelism, incorrect tenses, inappropriately used adjectives and adverbs, wordiness, irregular verbs, and idioms (common phrases/expressions). Examples of idioms are “better late than never” or “forget about it.” An answer choice may say “better late than forever” or “forget over it,” and you must determine that this answer is incorrect.

6. Since you will receive 1 point for correct answers and lose ¼ of a point for each wrong answer, don’t randomly guess! Eliminate incorrect answer choices to help you determine the best answer choice.

The Math Section:

7. There are approximately 44 multiple-choice and ten grid-in questions that test your knowledge up to Algebra II. One section is 20 minutes, and two are 25 minutes each. Topics tested in the math sections are: numbers, operations, algebra, functions, geometry, measurement, data analysis, statistics, and probability.

8. Always answer grid-in questions. Although you will lose ¼ of a point for each incorrect multiple-choice question, you will not lose any points for incorrect grid-in answers.

9. Make diagrams when tackling word problems; they’re especially useful for answering geometry, probability, and some algebra questions.

10. Become comfortable using your calculator before the test day. Also, the reference information at the beginning of each math section, including formulas, will help you answer many questions.

11. Underline exactly what the question is asking. For example, the question may ask you to find 2x - 4. Although the value for x may be listed in the answer choices, the question specifically asks you to find 2x - 4.

12. Try plugging in numbers for variables. For example, if the question asks for the solution of |b – 1| < 4 such that b is an integer, you can plug in different values for b.

The Critical Reading Section:

13. The critical reading section contains 2 sections that are 25 minutes long and 1 that is 20 minutes long (about 19 sentence completion questions and about 48 passage-based questions). Sentence completion questions are listed in order of difficulty: the first few questions are easier than the next few, which are easier than the last.

14. If you are unsure of the meaning of a word in the sentence completion section, you can usually tell if the word has a negative or positive connotation. Therefore, read the sentence first and determine if the blank(s) should contain words that have either positive or negative connotations. Clue words that indicate that the blanks will have opposite connotations are “despite,” “but,” “yet,” “rather,” “although,” and “however.” Clue words that indicate that they have similar connotations are “and,” “since,” “therefore,” and “because.”

15. If you know that the blanks must contain words that are similar in connotation, then immediately eliminate an answer choice like “cynical and joyful.” You can also plug in words that you would choose yourself to complete the sentence, and then pick an answer choice that is similar. Reread the sentence with your answer choice(s).

16. For the passage-based reading, read the italics before the passage, underline important key words in each line as you read, and then read the first and last line of each paragraph to get the main idea of the passage.

17. Answer line reference questions before more general questions on the passage’s tone and main idea. This way by the time you answer the more general questions, you will understand the focus of the passage. Remember: Any answer you choose must be directly supported in the passage, for example, with a quote from the passage.

Before that big day, determine what areas of the test are the most difficult for you, and improve the skills needed to do well on those sections. Practice test-taking strategies for the SAT, but also improve your ability to quickly write essays, identify grammar rules, determine appropriate vocabulary words, analyze a passage, and answer complex Algebra and Geometry questions. Apply these principles and you can dramatically improve your SAT score!
